For over two decades, this belief has shaped the Foundation’s approach to transforming learning in India’s government schools. At a time when education reform is increasingly associated with devices, digital platforms and emerging technologies, Sampark Foundation begins with something more fundamental—the relationship between a teacher and a child. Technology can enable learning, but it is the teacher who gives it meaning.

This thinking is reflected in the Foundation’s philosophy of “Teachers First, Students Second.” When teachers are equipped with the right pedagogy, simple tools, relevant technology and the confidence to use them effectively, better learning outcomes can follow at scale.

Rather than creating parallel systems, Sampark Foundation works within the government education system, partnering closely with state governments to strengthen what already exists. Its programmes are designed around the realities of government classrooms—varying learning levels, limited resources, unreliable connectivity and teachers balancing multiple responsibilities. The objective is to make teaching easier and learning more engaging without making either dependent on expensive or complex infrastructure.

At the centre of this approach is Sampark Smart Shala, which brings together frugal innovation, technology and the Foundation’s “Sahi Kram, Sahi Dhang” pedagogy—the right sequence and the right way of teaching. Innovations such as Teach-Easy Kits, Sampark Didi, Sampark TV and the Sampark Smart Shala App translate difficult concepts into simple, engaging learning experiences. Designed to align with state curricula and function in resource-constrained environments, these tools are built around a fundamental question: Will this help a teacher teach better?

The same philosophy guides the Foundation’s approach to artificial intelligence. Sampark AI designed not to replace the teacher, but to strengthen the teacher and the education system around the classroom. By using data and AI enabled insights to understand classroom usage, learning progress and implementation gaps, the Foundation aims to help teachers and education administrators make better-informed decisions.

Technology provides intelligence and timely support; teachers continue to provide judgement, context, empathy and the human connection essential to learning. Today, Sampark Foundation works across eight Indian states and has empowered more than 8.5 lakh teachers, reaching millions of children across government schools. Its scale, however, is not viewed merely through numbers. The larger objective is to create solutions that can be adopted, owned and sustained within government systems, allowing effective classroom practices to become part of everyday teaching rather than remain dependent on an external organisation.

The roots of this philosophy can be traced to the three people who founded Sampark Foundation in 2005—Vineet Nayar, Anupama Nayar and the late Janak Nayar.

Janak Nayar, who spent 35 years as a teacher, believed deeply in the power of sampark—the human connection between a teacher and a child. Anupama Nayar, a trained special educator, brought an understanding of how children learn and contributed to shaping the Foundation’s pedagogical approach. Vineet Nayar (Former CEO of HCLTech and Founder-Chairman Sampark Foundation) brought his experience of leading large-scale organisational transformation and a conviction that sustainable change begins by enabling the people closest to where value is created.

Together, these perspectives helped shape an education model that places people before technology and classroom realities before complexity.

Two decades later, that principle continues to define Sampark Foundation. Tools will evolve, artificial intelligence will become more capable, and classrooms will continue to change. Yet the Foundation’s central belief remains constant: meaningful education transformation begins with the teacher.

Because when a teacher is empowered to teach better, a child has a better opportunity to learn. And when that happens across lakhs of classrooms, individual moments of learning can become systemic change.

HOW A TEACHER-FIRST APPROACH IS RESHAPING LEARNING IN INDIA’S GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS At the heart of Sampark Foundation’s work A is a simple belief: the most powerful force in a classroom is an empowered teacher.
